Re-cap on a year gone bye. (part 1)

I just thought id shear this little re-cap with you all on what Ive accomplished during the year past since I posted my first ever Drum Cover up on youtube on the 19th of October 2010.

Above is my drum cover of “sex is on fire” by: The kings of Leon.

This was the first drum cover I invested my time into and a song I already knew well. That’s why it was chosen. It was recorded with the same video recorder I still use an iphone 4 (I didn’t have my own at the time so I used my brothers). I had no mixing equipment nor did I have the mics (they were however on my xmas list). As such all the external audio you here is direct from the iphones Mic, Which I have to say is pretty dam good for what it is.

I also didn’t own my closed cup earphones which I later discoed are essential for doing these types of covers and are invaluable to all types of musicians. At the time I was using a set of in ear SONY running earphones. These not only leaked an awful lot of sound. I also had to turn them right up so I could hear the music over the drums. Which is externally damaging to your hearing :-S

The recordingwas then pulled into Microsoft Media Player and subsequently mixed with the original song I played along to. I also discovered that you had to use the exact same file for recording and editing as some not all are different. Played at different speeds maybe done with out a click track so the tempo changes. All in all it yielded a decent out come but not amazing. I did a small series using this set up which I named the Black and White series which consisted of 5 Videos all varying styles.

They were:

“Sex is on Fire” by the Kings of Leon
“Dakota” By the Steriophonics
“All the small things” By Blink 182
“ Chop Suey” By System of a Down
“Thundercats theme” This was a request from a friend and was gr8 fun to play. (I will be re doing this with the new Mic’s so you can here the drumming better.)

This takes me up to the end of December just before Christmas. Which I hoped would bring me my drum mics and the possibility of a Mixer in the New Year.

I also managed to finish my Website and adverts for my drum teaching you can check that out @ http://www.ajbennett.co.uk  and set up a cover band called “Nowhere Fast” .

Doing all the above really helped me get back into my Drumming which at the time had become very stagnant and boring (playing had become more of a chore). It brought the joy back into music that had been missing for so long. After been such a big part of my early childhood.

Below are a couple of the Vids please check the rest of the series out on my youtube channel ajbennettdrums.

I hope you enjoyed part 1

About ajbennettdrums

I have been playing drums for over 20 years now and currently have over 9 years of teaching experience. I am comfortable playing all styles and am a proficient sight reader of music. I started playing drums at the tender age of 7 and I vividly remember exactly what it was that got me into drumming. One Sunday afternoon I was watching a documentary on classic 80’s bands, equipped with huge Drum Kits taking up most of the stage. I then proceeded to empty out a tonne of boxes in my room, cut holes in them and sticky-tape bits together to create my first drum kit (using pencils as sticks). At that point, my dad thought it would be a good idea to send me off for Drum Lessons and from that moment on I have never looked back.
